Private student loans are issued by credit unions, banks, and other finance companies, who may service the loans themselves or use another party for servicing.

Student loan forgiveness/debt relief is a benefit of federal student loans that cancels a remaining balance of certain loans if you meet the criteria. You may be eligible to have a portion of your loans forgiven if you work in public service.

Private student loans are not eligible for these programs offered by the U.S. Department of Education.
